Health & Wellness

At Baker, the health and wellness of our students is our primary concern.  It is reassuring to our entire community to have our school nurse on-site every day in case a child becomes ill, needs medication at a certain time of day, or special attention after taking a friendly fall on the playground or basketball court.

In addition, our team of teachers and administrators collaborate with our nurse to ensure that Baker’s environment is space is as safe as possible for children with severe allergies and dietary sensitivities.

Our School nurse, Anne Riggs, can be reached at 847-425-5816 or ariggs@bakerdemschool.org.

Mrs. Riggs works with faculty on health education for all students, and cares for the daily healthcare needs of children in the school. She is responsible for all student health records and requests from the state for mandated school health compliance. In addition, she trains all faculty to be CPR certified.

If your child has any special health needs, please contact school nurse prior to the start of the school year to discuss medical care and accommodations that will be required during the school year. Health forms are available to download on the Baker Demonstration School website.

Baker also offers an Allergy Awareness Playgroup on Wednesday mornings from 9-10:30am. This playgroup is open to children ages infant-4 years old, and is available for Baker families, friends, neighbors, and community members.

“The Allergy Awareness Playgroup really helped ease my tension in sending my daughter to school. The ability for her to meet other children with the same sort of dietary restriction and my own ability to talk with other parents who share the same concern for their children was so helpful for the both of us. It’s clear that Baker has their community’s best intentions in mind.”

In addition to allergy awareness and the safety of each student within the classroom, one integral aspect to the Baker experience is physical health. Physical Education becomes a daily staple in our students’ schedules beginning from first grade and continuing through eighth grade. In addition to our Physical Education curricula, students have the ability to use our pool, gymnasium, and outdoor field. The community comes together at the end of each academic year to participate in the school-wide Baker 5K.
