Wandering Wednesday #5

Baker Kindergarten class learning on Wandering Wednesday

Well, we were hoping for rain and it finally happened! Rain provided opportunities for our Kindergarten class to jump in puddles, play with mud, and get nice and dirty! New weather brings new experiences!

Today was our first experience taking public transportation to our location.  This week it was the 423 Pace Bus to Erikson Woods in Winnetka.  We walked to the Linden Street Station, noticing all the flowers, trinkets, and Halloween decorations along the way.  The bus ride was 15 minutes long, just the perfect distance at this point in the year.  The kids made many observations along the way, and learned about how to use the systems on the bus and be respectful of the other riders.

When we arrived at the woods, we oriented ourselves on the park map, then checked out an old-fashioned water well with a hand pump.  Everyone took a turn pushing the pump and bringing up water!

Onward we went, over the river and into the Woods.  But first, we had to have our Winne the Pooh moment of finding something that floats to watch flow down the river!Kindergarten class dynamic learning on Wandering Wednesday in Evanston

We began our time with a quick snack and a partial reading of the beautiful book, Lost in the Woods. (But not before 8 children had to use the port-a-potty..don’t worry, we had wipes!)

Once we were all fueled-up, we headed into the deep woods.  We began our time with a poison-ivy hunt where we used what we talked about at morning meeting: Leaves of Three, Let it Be, to make sure we were safe from poison ivy.  We marked any potential threats with fabric and the children avoided those areas.

Then it was time to play!

After learning a few lessons: bring gloves whenever it rains, bring multiple pairs of extra socks, don’t fall in the lake….we were ready to call it for the day in order to have lunch. We ate, charted the temperature, added pages to our weather conditions journals, and ran around in the field.  It was then time to go, so we headed to the bus stop.  We had just enough time to enjoy Ms. Beth’s amazing Wednesday special snacks: Blueberries and Mini-pumpkins.  Then we hopped back on the bus, thoroughly exhausted, and had a nice, warm ride home!

Overheard on today’s adventures:

Wow…this is amazing!

Do not pull that. That’s the dinger when you want to stop

This is the road I take to get home

Can we stop for a snack?

I’m afraid of Poison Ivy

Port-a-potty eeeehehehehhethe

The clickers[geese],my friends from North Carolina are back

Look I saw a heron! I saw his wings

Who wants to go fishing?

I caught a stick!

A bungee cord makes the best fishing pole when you don’t have one.

I fell into the lake!

We need everybody who can help with your colorful things…we’re going to have a party over there

Welcome Animal Day: We decorate the house for animals…and people!

What are you guys doing? Covering poison ivy?

I like when my hair gets wet

We can teach people to fish over here

That wasn’t wandering…that was an adventure!

This is the best day of my life and a muddy one too!

Where’s Daisy?! Oh there she is!

I’m sleepy. I’m sleepy. I’m so so sleepy.

After I take a long warm shower at home, I’m taking a snuggly nap.
