At Baker, we believe that play is the language of childhood. It is the foundation for all academic/cognitive learning from Preschool through Kindergarten. Our mixed age program offers a warm and stimulating environment that supports a trajectory of growth and wonder. Our youngest learners are known and valued for their individual learning dispositions.
Inquiry projects emerge from children’s play. An interest in trees might yield questions about who lives in a tree and a study of forest begins with a walk to a nearby preserve. Baker teachers create spaces that engage young learners in experiences that develop skill in language arts, the sciences, mathematical thinking, and social studies. Honoring diversity in voice and idea contributes to the development of a rich community of young learners. The Baker experience is truly longitudinal.
Baker children grow up to be self-confident eighth graders who retain an intrinsic curiosity about the world. This confidence, engaged curiosity and deep love of learning is the hallmark of a Baker student in high school, college and beyond.
Through guided experiences, our youngest learners grow into kindergarteners who delve into a wide range of project/inquiry-based learning themes. From the explorations of material and media in preschool to the study of the butterfly metamorphosis in Kindergarten, thoughtfully chosen materials and rich experiences give the children opportunities to explore, create and cooperate. The social-emotional, physical, language and cognitive development of each child centers around engagement in enriching classroom experiences.
Structures and routines are put in place that invite the children to make decisions, compare, form question, and to solve authentic problems Through extended periods of play, arts enrichment programs and participation in meaningful, community activities the child learns about her/himself and the larger world. Young children are engaged in important work: they are rapidly making connections that will shape their views of the world and themselves, they are becoming their own person, and they are developing the skills necessary to form healthy relationships. As part of our Buddy Program, our youngest students form meaningful bonds with children in Kindergarten through 8th grade.
Baker offers several preschool day options to meet the unique needs of your family:
Half-day preschool program: 8:30 – 11:15 a.m. (3 or 5 days per week)
Full-day preschool program: 8:30 – 3 p.m. (3 or 5 days per week)
Before care (included in tuition): available from 7:30 a.m. – 8:30 a.m.
After care offered from 3:00 p.m. – 6 p.m.
Our Early Childhood Teachers Our master’s level teachers with more than 75 years of collective experience in Early Childhood education support a child’s natural desire to explore, interact, and play. learn, grow, explore and question. They have deep respect for children’s emotional lives and strong observational skills to know how to best support a child’s language and social development. A Baker child negotiates, problem solves, innovates and communicates using a wide range of dynamic learning experiences.
