Lisa Winn, current parent and Co-Chair of the Baker Benefit in the 2015-16 and 2016-17 school years wrote this reflection of attending her first Baker Benefit as a new parent:
As parents new to Baker last year, my husband and I also were newcomers to the Benefit, and we could not have enjoyed ourselves more.
One of my favorite things about the event is that it isn’t a formal, sit-down dinner, like you’ll see at some schools. The vibe was casual and modern. We ate and drank, mingled, participated in the live auction — another highlight of the night for me — and monitored items in the silent auction the rest of the evening.
Everyone was incredibly welcoming, which made it easy to chat with a variety of people, both parents and faculty members. I had never been to a large Baker social event like this before, but the relaxed atmosphere was perfect for meeting new people.
Being part of a small school means that parents have the opportunity to get to know everyone in our community, and the Benefit is a great place to do so. We were able to meet a lot of the special subject teachers our daughter had told us so much about. As a new family, it was great to put faces with names for more of her teachers and her friends’ parents.
To be sure, the Benefit is a fundraising event, but we were glad to see that Baker embraces all levels of giving. We loved this because it allows everyone to feel like they can be a part of the giving process, no matter your financial contribution. We certainly felt that our donation was appreciated and that we were a valuable part of helping secure the continued success of our school.
As one of three Benefit co-chairs, I welcome and encourage all Baker parents to join us Friday, March 3, at SPACE in Evanston. To purchase your ticket or learn more about what’s in store, please visit our Benefit home page.
I hope to see you there!
