Our community came together and donated 164 coats towards the students’ coat drive! Ms. Gehrig’s 3rd grade class and Ms. Beaudoin’s 6th grade advisory led this effort, asking the Baker Community to donate coats for Chicago Public Schools (CPS). They set a goal of collecting 100 coats, which makes their success that much sweeter, gathering 164% of that goal! The students are so thrilled to be able to “share the warmth” that you, the Baker community, contributed in the form of needed outerwear benefiting the students of Swift Elementary in Chicago.

Swift Elementary is 20 minutes away from Baker, near the Thorndale Red Line stop at 5900 N. Winthrop. Swift is a PreK-8th grade school that has almost 700 students. Swift is one of the most diverse schools in the city, with over 50 languages spoken. It is also a school in which 90% of the students qualify for free/reduced lunch. Needless to say, the staff at Swift were totally overjoyed to receive the coats, and distributed them yesterday to kids right away, just in time for the second snowfall and cold snap this past week. They wanted to convey their deep gratitude to Baker’s community for being so generous with their donated outerwear and the students, specifically, for spearheading these efforts.
It is gratifying to learn how our efforts make a real difference in the lives of others. Thank you to all in our community for coming together and helping show our students the importance of serving the world, paramount to our mission as an institution.
