Although Baker has been around since 1918, it is important to recognize that it has been an independent school only since 2005. For the better part of a century, it relied on the financial assistance of National-Louis University to underwrite its programs. Only since its independence has the establishment of a philanthropic program been necessary for the strength and growth of the school. In fact, it was a dedicated community of parents, grandparents, alumni, faculty and friends who rallied together just a few short years ago to collect and contribute $3.5 million to ensure that our school would see a bright future for generations of students to come.
Tuition covers the basics. Almost. We all know that independent schools can be costly, but tuition covers only a portion of their operating budgets. At Baker, the gap between tuition and the actual cost of each child’s education is approximately $2,500 per year. Annual gifts from families, board members, grandparents, faculty, and friends make up the difference to ensure class sizes remain small, teaching is excellent for all, and arts and daily physical education remain part of a rich and integrated curriculum.
Baker is a diverse school by design. It values cultural, ethnic, and economic difference, and respects the many types of families who join its community. Keeping tuition within a reasonable range relative to peer schools ensures that Baker maintains its diversity. Growing a thriving Annual Fund is preferable to increasing tuition, which would put a Baker education out of reach of all but a few. Furthermore, fundraising supports the school’s increasing commitment to financial aid, ensuring that a broad spectrum of children can attend.
Participation matters. Every gift makes a difference. The school recognizes that all Baker families are different. Some can give more, some can give less, but all can give something. Our most important goal is 100% participation, regardless of gift size. Sharing through fundraising strengthens the Baker community and tells the world that we believe in the quality of the school’s education. It also encourages others, including those who are capable of bestowing educational grant monies, to support the school as well.
Today, we invite you to explore the many ways that you can help make a difference for Baker Demonstration School.
